hi Blades Music - Great walkthrough of FaderPort 8 built-in functions. If the Transport section sends "standard" Mackie messages, do you know what MIDI channel &/or ports they are sent on? I have a device called "MIDI Solutions RELAY" which can be programmed to turn on / turn off my Red Record Lightbulb depending on the channel / port / Note or Sysex message. Your advise appreciated. Enjoy the Cakewalk videos, since I too am a long-time user of Cakewalk who just couldn't make the jump to a different DAW. Thanks!

I love cakewalk.. when they release the new Sonar, it's going to amaze. One thing you can do with Cakewalk, that you can't do with any other DAW is creating tempo maps from an imported audio, set the project to follow that tempo map.. Sure, most can do this.. but only Cakewalk can do it in 3-4 steps for your entire audio track (or a selection of it).. first, trim the beginning and end, to eliminate the pre-post audio, isolate just the audio track. Select it, and grab and drop it on the Project ruler.. Done.. wait for the render, and look at the tempo map, it's all there.. no more grabing audio data and moving it, every measure or more. Why this is good.. Say you want to add new tracks to a live audio recording with variable tempo, or one that you don't know the tempo, and you want to overdub some new tracks. You import it, and do the 3 steps above.. and DONE, you're ready to overdub and nothing else to do.. It's all lined up.. No other DAW can do this in 3 steps. Cakewalk was one of the very first to implement ARA, this is why.

Some rerasons to stay by CW: - small dots before the clips- so one can see all the time, if the track is emty or ith has some recored stuff. The dots can notify you, if you leave even a single note somewhere in the track. In S1? Nothing. I never see witch track is empty ore empty after an event (clip). - fast navigating to the beginning - end of file (ctrl+pgup or pgdn). In S1 is unable to jump to the end of the project. It's very useful too. - In CW you can record over an old recording, and you will find two clips (rectangles) as result. They are ovelrlapping. You can edit or delete them separately. In S1? The new recording deletes the old, or the old and new will be merged. Why?? - In CW the recorded blocks end, as you stop. In S1 the event sizes will be quantized, rounded up to whole, 1/2, 1/4 etc. bars. In CW you can make 1 sec clips for example. - In CW is simple to select a track with all of the content with 1 click - No slide function in S1!!! Why?? I can simply make place for some new phrases by sliding all of selcted stuff. Not only with drag a drop with mouse (as in S1), but with the exact parametered slide menu (bars, ticks, seconds...) - CW: SPACE stops playing and rewind to the starting position. CTRL+SPACE stops and not rewind. You can simply choose. In S1? Either, or... Very sad... - CW is more CPU friendly, much more - Event list view in CW. Very important! You can see the recorded data, and edit or delete them as you wish. I used it to find some accidentaly recorded pitch bend value and much more. You can filter to notes, controller data, sysx, patch change command, aftertouch and many more. Very useful! I've only been using the the Studio One for a few weeks, but the listed functions are so important, that I go back to Cakewalk. I have a Faderport 16, this led me to try Studio One, but the lack of the listed options drives me back to CW. S1 has many very good tricks and options, but... Sorry. I am waiting for the new Cakewalk Sonar, I hope, it will be cheap, but not free. Quality can only be expected for money.

2 years later, I learned that 10th gen Intel is better than 13th gen Intel. Because scheduler on Windows 11/Windows 10 is garbage. If you have 10th gen or older, wait a bit for Microsoft to sort it. I have 24 cores on i9-13900k, but I have less stability than on i9-9900k Worse buffer settings. And for some odd reason Glary Utilities takes 5 times longer to clean my system on 13900k, compared to 9900k that took about 5 seconds or so. The way I circumvented scheduler issues: I used ProcessLasso software and then I set affinity of the cpu for AudioDiag to four E-Cores of 13900k for gaming purposes, then unchecked those cores in the actual game's program with same ProcessLasso Drop out reduced substantially, and I was able to run Red Dead Redemption at 128 buffer samples. I tried about 8 audio devices, and only RME HDSPe Raydat and RME ADI-2 DAC 2 both gave the best stability, MOTU MK5 was next best (and I kept it for best sound)

I'm in the process of evaluating Studio One ( current cakewalk user ) - When you showed the drum setup in Studio One, I noticed you had tracks in the arranger/track view for each drum channel. I figured out how to get the channels in the mixer/console view (super easy in studio one) but for the life of me can't figure out how to get those same channels in the track view with a separate midi track like in Cakewalk. Possible? Would love to see a drum mapping video as well (although I've actually never set up my drum mapping in Cakewalk and need to do so - I use Superior Drumm 3)

This is a good comparison. I have used cakewalk for decades. Just recently started to experiment with studio one. When you were talking about busses the one thing that Cakewalk has that is kind of like the busses in Studio One is patch points and aux tracks. if you want a buss next to your tracks then that is the way to go. In my opinion both DAW programs are really good. Would be hard to choose a favorite. DAW programs are like shoes. You got to choose the ones that are most comfortable and most features comes down to personal preference.

Since Cakewalk/Sonar and everyone who establish their productivity on those we're wrongfully abused by Gibson profiteering, any coin toss comparison between two Daws, Cakewalk should always win. If only to help re-establish to prominence and make up for the years of lost development that Gibson caused. It infuriated me that Cakewalk was not supported by Windows 7. Could not be installed. Microsoft certainly wasn't going to create updates Windows 7 to fix the problem. And then Gibson buys Cakewalk, charges $200 for lifetime upgrade, knowing that they were going to discontinue development. For these reasons Cakewalk should be recommended revived and fully supported. If you believe in Justice.

I have a friend who advocated Sonar some time ago. I had been using Zoom hardware recorders and liked them. I never got fluent with Cakewalk but I was happy when the free version was released. I reconnected with my friend who was using Cakewalk but had mostly switched to Studio One. I was an audiophile and an electronics technician as well as musician but life got busy. I understand in principle what I want to do in Cakewalk but the interface is so rich it's overwhelming. Studio One has some good thinking and I like what I see, plus collaboration looks easier with their subscription. This video is extremely helpful. Things like the splitter can be largely done with sends, which emulates hardware. Presents seems less constrained by such thinking and more into flow. Version 6 has some sweet improvements. Cakewalk is being well maintained but it's not getting the kind of improvement as Studio One. Thanks!

It seems like reason 5 works like a DCA but gives options for individual tracks. I learned digital mixing on a presonus 32 and then moved onto the X32. I later took what I learned on the X32 and worked on a Midas Pro 48 I think? Very similar. I’m about to hook up my new faderport this weekend for my home studio and I’m really excited. Thanks for the video and I look forward to mixing in the studio in similar ways as live using Behringer or Midas. ✌🏻❤️

I think all basic DAW functions (except plugins) should be provided by Presonus. One of my reasons for leaving Reaper was its need for a lot of user produced add-ons, also it could be modified so much that users hardly could say they used the same DAW anymore and hence had less common experience to share. However, I will make an exception for the color toolbar and try it out. It looks like something Presonus should have included in S1 in the first place. The stock color palette is confusing, I find it hard to remember which red color I use for guitar etc. I would have liked something like Cubase's take where you can set up your own palette with names and colors.
